Serhou Guirassy moves up in Champions League scorers

Guinean striker Serhou Guirassy has moved into the top five African goalscorers in UEFA Champions League history after scoring twice in Borussia Dortmund’s 2-1 victory over Sabah on Tuesday.

The Dortmund forward was instrumental in securing the victory, opening the scoring in the 10th minute before finding the net again in the 53rd minute to hand the German side all three points.

His brace took his Champions League goal tally to 23, placing him fifth on the list of Africa’s highest goalscorers in the competition’s history and bringing him closer to Senegalese forward Sadio Mané.

Mané currently occupies fourth position with 27 goals, meaning Guirassy needs just four more strikes to draw level with the former Liverpool and Bayern Munich attacker.

The milestone further underlines Guirassy’s growing influence in European football, with the Guinea international continuing to make his mark on the Champions League stage through his goalscoring exploits.

Despite facing a challenging assignment against Sabah, Guirassy demonstrated his importance to Dortmund by delivering at crucial moments. His early opener gave the German side the advantage, while his second goal proved decisive after Sabah managed to get back into the contest.

Guirassy’s progress places him alongside some of the continent’s most celebrated forwards, including Mané, Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o and former Ivory Coast international Didier Drogba.

Eto’o sits third on the all-time African scoring list with 30 goals, while Drogba occupies second place with 44 goals.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah remains the leading African goalscorer in Champions League history with 50 goals, maintaining a six-goal advantage over Drogba.

Guirassy still has considerable ground to cover to challenge the leading names, but his current tally puts him in a position to climb further up the rankings if he maintains his scoring form in the competition.

With Dortmund continuing their European campaign, Guirassy will have further opportunities to add to his tally and close the gap on Mané as he pursues a higher position among Africa’s Champions League greats.
