De la Fuente condemns ‘unacceptable’ Argentina clashes after Spain’s World Cup triumph

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has branded the post-match clashes with Argentina players after the 2026 World Cup final as “unacceptable”, in his first direct public intervention on the chaotic scenes that followed his side’s victory.

Spain lifted the World Cup for the second time in their history with a 1-0 win over Argentina after extra time at MetLife Stadium last Sunday, but on-pitch celebrations were marred by a series of confrontations involving players and staff from both teams.

Speaking on Spanish television, De la Fuente said he was initially unaware of what was unfolding as he celebrated the title with his squad, but condemned the behaviour once he had seen the images.

“At that moment I didn’t know what had happened because I was celebrating with the players,” he explained. “But what took place after the final whistle cannot be accepted under any circumstances.”

The comments, highlighted by French broadcaster RMC, reflect the strongest language De la Fuente has used so far in relation to the incident.

“What we saw is unbearable and unacceptable,” he said. “Players at this level, led by a great coach, must surely have felt bad themselves when they saw that behaviour. These are scenes that do not belong in football.”

Players and staff named in chaotic finale

The closing moments at MetLife Stadium degenerated into what witnesses described as widespread altercations, with several figures from the Argentina camp singled out in the aftermath.

Leandro Paredes was heavily involved in heated and physical confrontations with a number of Spain players, while Nahuel Molina was seen striking Rodri during the ensuing melee.

Fabian Ayala, assistant to Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni, was also accused of assaulting Dani Olmo amid the disorder that followed the final whistle.

The clashes overshadowed a historic night for Spain, who required extra time to edge past the world champions and add a second World Cup crown to the one they claimed in 2010.

Spain boss praises his players’ restraint

De la Fuente reserved particular praise for the way his squad handled the situation, insisting they maintained discipline despite what he described as clear provocation.

“I want to commend the behaviour of our players in the face of this kind of aggression and provocation,” he said. “They kept their composure and acted in a sporting manner right until the end.”

The 63-year-old, who took charge of Spain’s senior side in 2022, stressed that such professionalism was all the more important on a global stage watched by millions.

For De la Fuente, Spain’s response on the pitch and during the subsequent flashpoints underlined the values he expects from the national team, even in the most intense circumstances.

FIFA opens investigation into World Cup final incidents

World governing body FIFA has already launched a formal investigation into the events that followed the final, in order to establish responsibility and determine possible sanctions.

The disciplinary process will examine video footage and officials’ reports from MetLife Stadium as it considers whether to bring charges against individuals or federations involved in the confrontations.

FIFA has not set a public deadline for its findings, but any decision could have repercussions for players, coaches or staff named in the reports, as well as for the Argentine and Spanish football associations.

Spain’s victory in New Jersey closed a dramatic 2026 World Cup, but the fallout from the final is set to continue off the pitch as De la Fuente, his players, Argentina and FIFA await the outcome of the disciplinary case.
