Christian Kofane earns chance after Nathan Tella injury
Christian Kofane was a surprise starter for Bayer Leverkusen in the 3–1 defeat to Stuttgart, stepping into the lineup for clear tactical reasons.
Head coach Kasper Hjulmand explained that the forward was chosen primarily for his runs in behind the defence, a key element suddenly missing from the team.
That gap appeared because Nathan Tella was ruled out at short notice with muscular problems, depriving Leverkusen of a player who normally injects exactly that kind of dynamism. “With Nathan’s departure, we needed this option,” Hjulmand said after the match, noting that this was why he opted for a front two of Patrik Schick and Kofane.
Despite the loss, Hjulmand felt the idea worked in phases, especially before the break, when Leverkusen repeatedly found space behind Stuttgart’s back line. “Kofi showed today how difficult it is to do deep runs,” he added, admitting that several promising situations were not finished cleanly but still produced danger.
Looking ahead to the final Bundesliga game against Hamburg, Tella remains a doubt, and Kofane is also uncertain after picking up a shoulder issue that forced him off on 78 minutes. If neither is fit, players like Ernest Poku or the recently praised Malik Tillman could be handed a crucial opportunity in Leverkusen’s attack.
