Bukayo Saka seals Arsenal win over Aston Villa in Mikel Arteta milestone match

Bukayo Saka scored the decisive goal as Arsenal began their Premier League title defence with a second successive victory, beating Aston Villa in Mikel Arteta’s 250th league match in charge.

The England winger struck shortly before the hour mark to settle a closely fought contest at Villa Park, where Arsenal secured a clean sheet and maintained their perfect start to the new campaign.

Villa had hoped to respond after a difficult opening day, when they were beaten 4-0 by Brighton. Unai Emery’s side made the brighter start and came close to taking the lead after 12 minutes, Emiliano Buendia’s powerful effort from distance crashing against the crossbar.

Arsenal gradually took control of possession but found it difficult to create a clear opening before half-time. Their best chance came when Declan Rice met a corner with a header, only for Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Suzuki was making his Villa debut and became the first Japanese goalkeeper to play in the Premier League. Nicolas Jackson also made his first appearance for the club after joining from Chelsea in a club-record £65m transfer.

Villa threatened again soon after the restart. Ian Maatsen fired over from a narrow angle before becoming involved in a pivotal incident at the other end.

Referee Jarred Gillett initially awarded Arsenal a penalty after Maatsen brought down Saka. A VAR review, however, showed the foul had occurred just outside the area. Martin Ødegaard was unable to take advantage from the resulting free-kick, sending his effort narrowly wide.

Arsenal eventually found the breakthrough when Riccardo Calafiori timed his run beyond the Villa defence and delivered a low cross across the face of goal. Saka arrived to convert from close range.

The goal opened up the match, with Arsenal pushing for a second. Kai Havertz was denied by Suzuki in a one-on-one situation, while Bruno Guimaraes came on to make his Premier League debut for the Gunners.

Arsenal also gave Ezri Konsa his first appearance against his former club when he replaced Cristhian Mosquera. Arteta’s side defended their advantage effectively in the closing stages to claim an important away win.

“Really happy, it’s a massive win. It’s a tough place to come and earn three points. I think we deserved it,” Arteta said.

“We had a great performance. With 11, it wasn’t enough, the finishers came in and did a magnificent job to finish the game and win it.

“I know how tough it is to win here. Every big team has struggled against them because they are so good.”

The result was especially welcome for Arteta after Arsenal lost at Villa Park last season.

“Last year was the same. We know how difficult it is to earn points in this league,” he said.

“I always trust my players. The level depends on the moment as well. Last year, we lost here in a really difficult way. That was still in the tummy.”

Saka, who had an injury-hit end to the previous season, has now scored in each of Arsenal’s opening two league matches.

“It’s not easy coming here, they made it hard for us. It feels even better to come out with the win,” Saka said.

“The way they defend, really compact and with a high line, they caught us offside. We had to adapt to that.”

He also highlighted Arsenal’s defensive record after another shutout.

“One goal is normally enough for us because we are so solid at the back,” he said.

“All the boys put in a shift tonight. It helps with a clean sheet.”

Arsenal have now won their opening away league match for a fifth consecutive season, setting a new club record. Villa remain without a point and have not registered a shot on target in the Premier League this season.

Arsenal’s next match is on Sunday, when they host Chelsea at Emirates Stadium in an early meeting between two sides aiming to challenge near the top of the table.
