Brahim Diaz backed for larger Real Madrid role after Mourinho decision

Brahim Diaz has remained calm and focused after being left out of Real Madrid’s starting line-up for their La Liga opener against Elche, with Jose Mourinho assuring the midfielder that he will have opportunities to make an impact.

Diaz’s omission came as a surprise after he had featured regularly during Real Madrid’s pre-season preparations. However, according to Spanish outlet Defensa Central and people close to the player, the decision did not lead to anger or frustration.

The midfielder understood that Mourinho had selected Jude Bellingham to start and then brought new signing Yan Diomande on during the second half instead of turning to him. Despite wanting to play, Diaz continues to feel valued within the squad and believes he has the manager’s confidence.

Mourinho has reportedly told Diaz that he could be given a starting opportunity in Real Madrid’s next match against Real Sociedad. That assurance has helped the player remain composed as he competes for a regular place in a squad full of high-quality options.

Diaz is aware that establishing himself in the starting line-up will not be straightforward. Reflecting on the level of competition at Real Madrid, he said: “The best players are here, and it is difficult even to get a chance to play”.

The Spain international is also being considered for a flexible tactical role by Mourinho. The manager sees Diaz as capable of operating in several positions, particularly in matches when Real Madrid need a player who can drop into midfield and help the team control possession and the rhythm of the game.

That versatility could increase Diaz’s opportunities over the course of the season. His arrival does not automatically mean that Yan Diomande will take a greater share of the responsibility expected of him, with the coaching staff believing Diaz can perform some of the same duties.

His exact role is therefore likely to depend on the demands of each match and the tactical plan selected by Mourinho. The Portuguese manager does not want to make final judgements about his players’ responsibilities at such an early stage of the campaign.

Mourinho has spoken to members of the squad about their initial duties, while making it clear that those assignments can change according to the form each player produces. That approach leaves Diaz with a route back into the starting side, even though his opening role may be one below the first-choice line-up.

For now, the midfielder has been promised significant playing time and plenty of chances to establish his value. The meeting with Real Sociedad could provide an early opportunity for Diaz to show that he deserves a larger place in Mourinho’s plans.

Rather than treating his absence against Elche as a setback, Diaz is understood to view the situation as part of the competition for places at Real Madrid. His focus remains on taking advantage of the opportunities that follow and proving his importance in a squad where tactical adaptability may be as important as securing a regular starting position.
