Al Zawraa team manager Yahya Mohamed says Mohamed Sherif was fined by the Iraqi club after a minor verbal exchange with a team-mate.
The Egyptian forward joined Al Zawraa last summer after leaving Al Ahly.
“The club’s disciplinary action against Mohamed Sherif came because of a simple verbal argument with one of the players,” Yahya Mohamed told Modern MTI. “The matter is over, and the decision was taken before our match against Al-Shorta. Both players accepted the punishment.”
He added: “There was no clash involving a stick. It was only a verbal argument.”
Yahya Mohamed said Sherif and the other player were both available to play as normal, but stressed that the club’s disciplinary regulations applied to every member of the squad.
“Both players took part in the match normally,” he said. “However, the disciplinary regulations apply to everyone, and the announcement of the punishment was made in accordance with the agreement reached with all the players.”
The club manager confirmed that the sanction was a financial penalty, although Al Zawraa would not disclose the amount.
“The punishment is a financial fine, but we do not announce its value,” he said.
He also left open the possibility that the fine could eventually be cancelled if the players maintain good discipline.
“If the players who were punished comply with the regulations, the penalty may be dropped,” he added.
Sherif has made eight appearances for Al Zawraa this season. He has provided one assist but has not scored.
