Benin midfielder Dodo Dokou joins Portugal’s Leixões in landmark move
Beninese international Dodo Dokou has completed a transfer to Portuguese side Leixões FC, marking his first move into European football.
The second-division club confirmed the signing on Tuesday, 26 August 2025.
The 21-year-old midfielder, who has already earned 19 caps and scored twice for the Benin national team, arrives from Egyptian Premier League outfit Smouha SC.
While the terms of the deal have not been disclosed, Leixões have described their new addition as a “versatile midfielder capable of covering all central roles,” signalling the club’s high expectations for his contribution in the upcoming season.
Leixões, currently managed by João Nuno Fonseca, announced the news in an official statement: “The team has been further strengthened with the arrival of Dokou, a 21-year-old midfielder who stood out at Egyptian side Smouha SC.
Despite his young age, he is already an international with Benin, where he has earned valuable experience and scored important goals.”
The timing of the transfer suggests that both player and club were eager to finalise the move before the new season gathers momentum. The Portuguese side confirmed that Dokou has already taken part in a full training session with his new teammates, allowing him to settle quickly into the squad dynamics.
For Dokou, this step represents a significant turning point. Having spent three years in Egypt since joining Smouha SC in 2022, he established himself as a reliable figure in midfield. Over the course of 81 appearances across all competitions, he became a cornerstone of the team, though he left without securing any major silverware.
The move to Leixões, therefore, provides a new opportunity for growth in a league that has served as a stepping stone for many African talents seeking to make their mark in European football.
The Cheetah midfielder’s adaptability is one of the qualities that impressed his new club. Known for his ability to operate both as a deep-lying playmaker and in more advanced positions, he is expected to bring both creativity and balance to Leixões’ midfield options.
However, with this being his first taste of European football, the coming months will test his ability to adjust to a different level of competition and intensity.
Benin’s national team will also be closely watching his progress. At just 21, Dokou is considered part of the new generation of players expected to push the team forward in continental competitions.
His regular involvement in the international set-up already signals the trust placed in him by the national selectors.
For Leixões, the signing fits into their broader strategy of investing in young talent with potential resale value, while also strengthening the squad for their current campaign in Portugal’s Liga Portugal 2. If Dokou adapts quickly, he could prove to be a decisive asset in the club’s push for promotion.
While the official unveiling marks only the beginning of this new chapter, the expectation is clear: Dodo Dokou must now prove himself in Europe. For the midfielder, it is a chance not only to enhance his reputation but also to pave the way for greater opportunities in the years ahead.
