Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy ruled out of Egypt AFCON 2027 qualifiers due to injury

Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy has been ruled out of Egypt’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers due to an injury setback.

The North African football heavyweights will face Angola on September 25 in the opening round before travelling to face South Sudan on September 29 in the second round.

Following the injury setback, Egypt coach Hossam Hassan has decided to exclude El Shenawy from the Pharaohs’ upcoming international assignment.

Egypt is scheduled to begin their training camp during the September international break as preparations continue for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola and South Sudan.

As confirmed by Al Ahly, the experienced shot stopper suffered a severe bruise and sprain to the ligaments of his left elbow during the club’s match against Abu Qir Fertilizers. He is expected to begin treatment and rehabilitation as he works towards a return to full fitness.

El Shenawy will undergo a rehabilitation and physical therapy programme in the coming days as the medical team continues to monitor his recovery.

His absence represents a setback for Hassan as Egypt prepare for the crucial qualifiers, with the head coach now expected to make adjustments to his squad ahead of the two matches.

El Shenawy has established himself as one of the key figures in the Egyptian national team and Al Ahly, making his absence a notable blow to the Pharaohs ahead of their September assignment.

Egypt will be hoping to begin their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign on a positive note when they take on Angola before facing South Sudan four days later.
