Bayern Munich maintained their position at the summit of the Bundesliga with a 2-1 victory away to Mainz at the Mewa Arena on Saturday, while Borussia Dortmund recorded the same scoreline against Elversberg to remain level on points with the leaders.
Joshua Kimmich gave Bayern the lead in the 14th minute after Harry Kane capitalised on a defensive mistake by Mainz. Kane then laid the ball off to the Germany midfielder, whose powerful strike flew into the top-right corner.
Lennart Karl doubled Bayern’s advantage in the 57th minute, with Kane again providing the assist. Mainz reduced the deficit in the third minute of stoppage time when Phillip Tietz headed home, but Bayern held on to claim all three points.
The result moved Bayern to 21 points after nine matches, with the Bavarian club retaining first place on goal difference from second-placed Borussia Dortmund. Mainz remain 10th on 10 points.
Neuer forced off before half-time
Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was forced to leave the field with a foot injury before half-time, with Jonas Urbig taking his place.
The injury occurred after a Mainz attack ended with Lee Jae-sung putting the ball in the net. That effort was ruled out for offside, but Neuer was unable to continue.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper had only recently returned to action after a foot problem had kept him out of three Bayern matches. His comeback came against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, when Bayern won 2-0, and there were concerns that the issue may have resurfaced.
Neuer had started against Mainz in a notable appearance, having become the oldest player to represent Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.
Bayern are already dealing with a number of other absences. Jamal Musiala, Ismael Saibari, Serge Gnabry and Luis Diaz were all unavailable for the match.
Dortmund maintain pressure
Borussia Dortmund continued their pursuit of Bayern with a 2-1 home win over Elversberg, played at the same time as the leaders’ match.
Germany international Felix Nmecha scored both of Dortmund’s goals, finding the net in the 55th and 71st minutes.
Elversberg pulled one goal back in the 81st minute through Noel Futkeu, but Dortmund held on to remain second in the Bundesliga, separated from Bayern only by goal difference.
