Ali Maher meets Hany Abu Rida as Egypt prepare to confirm new coaching staff

FilGoal.com understands that Ali Maher is at the Egyptian Football Association headquarters for a meeting with Hany Abu Rida, ahead of the expected announcement of Egypt’s new coaching staff.

The Egyptian Football Association has already appointed Maher as the national team’s new head coach, replacing Hossam Hassan.

Mohamed Abdel Karim is understood to be close to taking the role of assistant manager, while Mohamed Abdel Wahed is in line to become assistant coach. Mostafa Fathi is expected to serve as goalkeeper coach.

Abdel Karim has worked alongside Maher at several clubs during recent years, including Al Asyouty, now known as Pyramids, as well as Al Masry, Smouha, Future, now Modern Sport, and Ceramica Cleopatra.

There is currently no plan to appoint a new director of the Egypt national team, at least for the squad’s camp for the two upcoming matches against Malawi.

Egypt will face Malawi on 13 and 17 November in the third and fourth rounds of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Hossam Hassan took charge of Egypt in 2022 and led the Pharaohs to fourth place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, as well as qualification for the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup.

Egypt are in Group Two of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign alongside Angola, South Sudan and Malawi.

The national team currently lead the group with four points, ahead of Angola on goal difference. Malawi are third on three points, while South Sudan are bottom without a point.

Egypt began their campaign with a goalless draw against Angola in Cairo before recording a 5-0 away victory over South Sudan.
