Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund says negotiations over a new contract for England striker Harry Kane are progressing well, despite reports that a preliminary agreement had already been reached.
German media reports earlier this week claimed Kane had agreed in principle to a deal that would keep him at Bayern Munich until 2029. However, Freund said there had been no major developments when he spoke at a news conference on Friday alongside manager Vincent Kompany.
“All possibilities remain open until the contract has been officially signed, and there are no new developments at the moment,” Freund said, according to ESPN.
He added: “The talks are going extremely well and we are very positive. Everyone knows how determined we are to extend his contract, and Harry feels very comfortable here in Munich.”
Kane, 33, has produced outstanding numbers since joining Bayern Munich from Tottenham in 2023. He has scored 152 goals in 154 appearances and has finished as the Bundesliga’s leading scorer in every season in which he has played.
The striker helped Bayern Munich win two Bundesliga titles and the German Cup last season. He also equalled England’s record for international appearances on Tuesday, reaching 125 caps, and marked the occasion by scoring twice in a 3-0 victory over Czech Republic.
Those performances have placed Kane among the leading contenders for the Ballon d’Or, with the winner due to be announced in London later this month.
His Bayern Munich team-mate Michael Olise is also included among the nominees, but Kompany played down the importance of discussing their chances before Saturday’s match against Augsburg.
“I think the decision has already been made, hasn’t it? So I cannot change anything, whatever I say,” Kompany said. “I’m sorry, but the Ballon d’Or is not on my mind every day. My full focus today is on the game against Augsburg tomorrow, Saturday.”
He added: “I hope one of Bayern’s players wins it, but the most important thing for me is, of course, winning trophies with the team. I know Harry and Michael well, and they think in exactly the same way. That is what makes us a united team.”
Freund was also asked about reports linking Olise with a move to Real Madrid. He said Bayern Munich were entirely relaxed about the future of the former Crystal Palace player.
“Michael has developed incredibly with us and is now one of the best players in the world,” Freund said. “We are extremely happy to have him in our team. His contract runs until 2029, so there is no pressure on us.
“He feels very comfortable at Bayern Munich and we remain in regular talks with him. As I said, there is no need to hurry.”
