Barcelonas transfer pull draws Alvarez into a familiar fight for Camp Nou

Julian Alvarez could become the latest high-profile player to push for a move to Barcelona after tensions with Atletico de Madrid intensified over his desire to leave and fulfil his ambition of wearing the Catalan club’s shirt.

The Argentina forward made his feelings clear after the country’s World Cup match against Austria, saying: “The best thing for everyone is to make the move, I want to fulfil my dream.” His comments came as the dispute between Alvarez and Atletico continued, with the player keen on a transfer to Barcelona.

Alvarez’s situation is not new in the history of players seeking a route to Camp Nou. Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo has highlighted several prominent footballers who pressured their clubs or took more confrontational steps before eventually joining Barcelona.

One of the clearest examples is Ousmane Dembele. The French winger’s attempts to leave Borussia Dortmund escalated to the point that he missed training. Dortmund manager Peter Bosz later described him as having become “untraceable” after the club failed to make contact with him.

Dembele eventually secured his move to Barcelona in a major transfer after insisting on leaving the German club.

Antoine Griezmann followed a similar path in the summer of 2019. The forward did not attend Atletico de Madrid training ahead of the new season as he sought to force a departure. Barcelona then completed the deal by paying his €120m release clause.

Philippe Coutinho also made his position clear when Liverpool announced that they wanted him to remain at the club. The Brazilian subsequently submitted a formal transfer request.

Liverpool initially rejected the request, but the player’s stance eventually contributed to the club agreeing to his move to Barcelona in January 2018. The transfer was completed for €135m.

The list of players who applied pressure to reach Barcelona extends beyond those more recent cases. Javier Mascherano pushed to leave Liverpool before joining the Catalan club, while Cesc Fabregas trained alone at Arsenal in protest at the delay to his proposed move.

Samuel Eto’o, meanwhile, became involved in a public dispute with Real Madrid as he sought a transfer to Barcelona. He eventually issued a statement declaring his desire to wear the club’s shirt.

With the disagreement between Alvarez and Atletico de Madrid continuing, the Argentina striker could become the newest name in a long line of stars who have used pressure, public statements or more direct action in pursuit of a Barcelona move.

His case therefore places him in company with Dembele, Griezmann, Coutinho, Mascherano, Fabregas and Eto’o players whose determination to reach Camp Nou ultimately helped shape their careers.
