Barcelona spot-kick decision defended after Raphinha gives them early lead at Elche

Barcelona took the lead at Elche in the opening round of La Liga after Raphinha converted a 15th-minute penalty, with former referee Iturralde Gonzalez saying there was no doubt the decision was correct.

Referee Quintero Gonzalez awarded the spot-kick early in the match after Raphinha was brought down inside the penalty area. The Barcelona forward then scored from the penalty spot to put the visitors ahead and open Barcelona’s goalscoring account in La Liga this season.

The decision was subsequently assessed by Iturralde Gonzalez, the refereeing expert for Spanish newspaper AS and radio station Cadena SER. He supported the referee’s call and rejected the suggestion that Raphinha had exaggerated the contact.

“At first glance, there is no room for doubt. The player did not pretend to fall,” Iturralde Gonzalez said.

He added: “Raphinha was struck on his raised right leg.”

The penalty gave Barcelona an early advantage at Elche, with Raphinha’s finish becoming the first league goal scored by the club this season. The incident centred on the contact inside the area and the referee’s decision to award Barcelona a penalty.

It also prompted discussion around whether the challenge was sufficient to justify a spot-kick. Iturralde Gonzalez’s view was that the contact on Raphinha’s right leg made the decision straightforward.

Raphinha’s goal came in the 15th minute, allowing Barcelona to move in front during the first round of La Liga fixtures. The penalty was taken after Quintero Gonzalez intervened following the challenge involving Raphinha in the Elche area.

A video shared with the report showed Raphinha scoring from the penalty and starting Barcelona’s goalscoring tally in the Spanish top flight for the season.

The ruling was therefore backed by the former referee, who works as an officiating analyst for AS and Cadena SER. His assessment focused on two points: that Raphinha had not simulated the incident, and that the Barcelona player had been hit on his raised right leg.

Barcelona’s early goal came directly from that decision, with Raphinha converting the opportunity in the 15th minute against Elche. Quintero Gonzalez’s award remained the key moment highlighted in the report, while Iturralde Gonzalez offered a clear defence of the penalty after reviewing the incident.

Fans were also invited to discuss the match, the decision and other football news in the Kooora forums.
