Amir Abdou begins Burkina Faso mission as attention turns to his technical team
Burkina Faso’s new national team coach Amir Abdou has begun his tenure with the Stallions, with attention now focused on who will form part of the technical staff supporting his mission.
The coach officially took charge on 1 March 2026 after signing an agreement with the Burkinabe Football Federation (FBF) that will keep him in the role until 2028.
The long-term deal reflects the federation’s intention to bring stability to the national team ahead of upcoming international competitions.
Officials believe the extended contract will allow Abdou the time needed to implement his footballing ideas and build a team capable of competing consistently at international level.
As part of the agreement reached with the federation, Abdou has been granted full authority to select the members of his coaching staff.
The freedom to choose his own technical team is considered unusual at this level and gives the coach the opportunity to work alongside individuals he trusts.
The federation hopes this approach will help create a stable environment around the national team while giving Abdou the flexibility to organise his staff in a way that best supports his vision for the Stallions.
Despite granting him broad autonomy, the FBF has also encouraged the inclusion of local expertise within the technical structure. The move is intended to ensure that knowledge of the domestic football landscape remains present within the national setup.
Incorporating coaches familiar with the country’s football system could also help maintain continuity between the national team and the wider development structures.
That approach appears to be taking shape with the possible arrival of Oscar Barro within the technical staff.
According to reports in the state-owned daily newspaper Sidwaya, the current head coach of Burkina Faso’s under-17 national team is expected to join Abdou’s staff as a second assistant coach.
If confirmed, the appointment would create a closer link between the youth teams and the senior national side, strengthening the pathway for emerging players.
It would also offer Barro the opportunity to work closely with Abdou as the new coaching team begins its work with the Stallions.
