Amidu Karim keeps Sierra Leone grounded ahead of pivotal Zambia showdown
Sierra Leone head coach Amidu Karim is approaching the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifier against Zambia with a blend of determination and caution, fully aware of the high stakes involved. The Group H clash, set for Tuesday, September 10, at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, could be a defining moment for the Leone Stars as they seek their first win in the qualifying campaign.
At the pre-match press conference, Karim acknowledged the pressure his team faces but expressed confidence in their preparation.
He was clear about the objective: a victory that would bolster Sierra Leone’s chances of progressing in the qualifiers.
However, he also recognized the formidable challenge that Zambia presents.
“As a coach, you have to accept the pressure. After our 0-0 draw against Chad, we understand that winning is crucial for us.
Our approach is straightforward: we are here to win,” Karim stated with resolve.
Despite his confidence, Karim is cautious about underestimating Zambia, particularly when they are playing on home turf.
The Sierra Leonean coach highlighted the unpredictable nature of African football, where past results don’t always dictate future outcomes.
“I never make predictions. We are fully aware of Zambia’s strength; the Chipolopolo are a very formidable team.
While they lost their last match against Ivory Coast, that does not diminish their capabilities,” Karim said, emphasizing the need for a pragmatic approach.
Karim also spoke about the readiness of his squad, noting their fighting spirit and determination to succeed.
He pointed out the quality within his team, including key players who are eager to step up in this crucial encounter.
“My players and I are ready to compete. We have a strong group, with experienced players. I know Zambia well, having faced them with the U23s two years ago.
They have highly athletic players, and their squad, including those based abroad, is very complete,” Karim added, showing his familiarity with the opposition.
While acknowledging the challenges of playing in Zambia, Karim remains optimistic yet realistic about the task at hand.
“Playing in Zambia is always difficult, but this is football; anything can happen at the final whistle,” he concluded, leaving the door open for any outcome.
Sierra Leone’s vice-captain, Yemi Dunia, echoed his coach’s sentiments, expressing confidence in the team’s ability to rise to the occasion.
“We know what it takes to qualify for the AFCON, and we are ready for the challenge ahead,” Dunia asserted, underlining the team’s determination.
The Leone Stars are acutely aware that only a victory against Zambia will keep their hopes of qualifying for the next AFCON alive.
The pressure is intense, but there is a sense of optimism within the Sierra Leonean camp. As they prepare to face a strong Zambian side, the Leone Stars know that the outcome of this match could significantly impact their journey to Morocco in 2025.
