Algerian international goalkeeper Alexandre Oukidja has wrapped up his season in Ligue 1 with FC Metz, finishing with an impressive personal record despite the team’s struggles.
According to statistics from “Sofascore,” Oukidja emerged as the second-most prolific shot-stopper in Ligue 1, making 129 saves over the course of the season.
Notably, he led the league in the number of saves made from shots within the penalty area, with 87 saves from 34 matches.
These remarkable statistics highlight Oukidja’s skill and resilience in goal, yet his efforts were not enough to secure Metz’s position in the top flight.
The team finished the season in 16th place with 29 points, narrowly avoiding direct relegation but not securing safety outright.
Throughout the season, Oukidja conceded 58 goals in 34 matches. Metz managed to secure victories in 8 games, drew 5, and suffered 21 defeats, reflecting a challenging campaign for the team.
Despite the team’s overall performance, Oukidja’s individual accolades are noteworthy. His consistent ability to thwart scoring attempts and his leadership from the backline were crucial in many of Metz’s encounters.
However, the team’s defensive frailties and lack of offensive support ultimately led to their precarious position.
As a result, Metz now faces the daunting task of a relegation playoff. They will compete against the third-placed team from Ligue 2, which will be determined from a match-up between Saint-Étienne and the winner of the Rodez vs. Paris FC fixture.
The crucial playoff games are scheduled for May 30 and June 2, and will determine whether Metz remains in Ligue 1 or drops to the second division.
