BREAKING NEWS: Vladimir Petkovic set to leave role as Algeria head coach

Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic is on the verge of leaving his role with the national team after reportedly informing his coaching staff that he will not continue in charge of the Desert Foxes.

According to reports from Al-Hayat TV, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has already initiated the process of ending Petkovic’s tenure.

The federation is said to have sent the 61-year-old a mutual termination agreement three days ago, with both parties now expected to complete the remaining administrative procedures before his departure is officially confirmed.

Petkovic’s imminent exit has prompted the FAF to accelerate its search for a new head coach, with the federation reportedly narrowing its focus to candidates from Spain.

The report claims the Algerian federation is currently reviewing the credentials of five Spanish coaches as it looks to appoint a successor ahead of the upcoming international window. The move signals a shift towards adopting a Spanish coaching philosophy for the national team.

Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has reportedly been ruled out of contention despite speculation linking him with the position. Sources indicate that his reported salary demand of €600,000 per month proved to be a major stumbling block during discussions.

In addition to the financial considerations, the report states that the FAF also believed Xavi’s managerial résumé did not fully meet the criteria established for the next Algeria coach.

The identity of Petkovic’s replacement is expected to be announced officially next week as the federation looks to ensure a smooth transition before the national team’s next fixtures.

Meanwhile, the FAF has also confirmed a change of venue for Algeria’s home matches. Beginning in September, the Desert Foxes will play their home fixtures at the Hussein Ait Ahmed Stadium in Tizi Ouzou, which will become the team’s official home ground for future international matches.
