Mbokazi injury blow leaves Bafana Bafana facing AFCON qualifying concern

South Africa’s preparations for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign have been hit by a major injury setback, with Mbekezeli Mbokazi ruled out for the rest of the Major League Soccer season.

The 20-year-old centre-back has suffered a thigh tear, Chicago Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter confirmed, ending a breakthrough debut campaign in the United States.

“Mbo being out for the year is a tough one,” Berhalter told Apple TV before Chicago Fire’s Leagues Cup match against Necaxa.

“It’s really about the next person stepping up and being a team that’s hard to score on. Closing the spaces, being compact.

“We’re working on that now, and I think today you’re going to see that.”

Mbokazi’s injury is a significant loss for Chicago Fire, but it is also a concern for Bafana Bafana ahead of their first 2027 AFCON qualifiers in September.

South Africa are expected to play six qualifying matches between September and December. That schedule will make the fitness and availability of key players an important consideration for whoever is in charge of the national team.

Mbokazi was one of South Africa’s standout players during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the former Orlando Pirates defender helped Bafana Bafana reach the knockout stages for the first time in the country’s history.

He played every minute of South Africa’s historic World Cup campaign, strengthening his reputation as one of the country’s leading young defenders.

His form had carried over into club football after he completed his move from Orlando Pirates to Chicago Fire in December. Mbokazi started all 12 of his Major League Soccer appearances this season and was the player who received the most fan votes for the 2026 MLS All-Star Game.

However, the injury prevented him from taking part in that showpiece event, and he will now miss the remainder of the MLS campaign.

Major League Soccer has confirmed that Chicago Fire will not place Mbokazi on their season-ending injury list. As a result, the club will not recover the U22 Initiative roster place currently occupied by the defender.

The injury also creates a defensive selection issue for Chicago Fire as they pursue a second successive MLS Cup Playoff appearance under Berhalter. The club are fourth in the Eastern Conference and have until 2 September to strengthen their squad before the Secondary Transfer Window closes.

For Bafana Bafana, Mbokazi’s absence removes a player who had become central to the team’s defensive plans after his influential performances at the 2026 World Cup. His recovery timetable will be watched closely as South Africa prepare to begin their next AFCON qualifying campaign.
