Samuel Eto’o remains the leading African provider of assists in Champions League history, but Mohamed Salah and Achraf Hakimi are only one assist behind the former Cameroon international.
Eto’o has recorded 20 assists in the competition, while Egypt forward Salah and Morocco defender Hakimi have each registered 19. The narrow margin leaves both current players within reach of the record held by the former striker.
The Champions League has long provided a stage for Africa’s leading footballers. While many have made their mark through goals, others have shaped the competition by creating opportunities for their team-mates. Eto’o, Salah and Hakimi are the three standout African players in the assists standings.
Eto’o sets the benchmark
Eto’o’s total of 20 assists places him at the top of the list. He enjoyed particularly successful spells with FC Barcelona and Inter Milan, winning the competition with both clubs.
His reading of the game, movement and ability to trouble opposing defences helped establish him as one of the most influential African players in European football. His contribution went beyond finishing chances, with his work in creating openings for others also a defining part of his career.
Salah and Hakimi within one assist
Salah is regarded primarily for his goalscoring, but his time with Liverpool has also demonstrated his ability to create chances and put team-mates in scoring positions. The Egypt international’s consistency at the highest level of European football has taken him to 19 assists and left him close to Eto’o’s record.
Hakimi has reached the same total from a different position. The Morocco international reflects the growing attacking importance of full-backs in modern football, regularly advancing down his flank and delivering dangerous crosses.
His 19 Champions League assists underline how much he contributes to his team’s attacking play, in addition to his defensive duties. His involvement in the final third has made him one of the competition’s most productive African players in that role.
With only one assist separating the leader from his two challengers, the standings remain open. Salah and Hakimi can still move into first place, while Eto’o currently retains his position as Africa’s leading provider in the tournament.
The three players also represent different ways of influencing a match. Eto’o’s attacking instinct, Salah’s creativity and Hakimi’s forward runs show that a player’s impact cannot be judged solely by the number of goals scored.
The contest is therefore still open between the experience of a Cameroon legend and the ambitions of two players who remain active at the highest level. Each new European campaign gives Salah and Hakimi another opportunity to close the gap and potentially overtake Eto’o.
