Manuel Neuer faces at least six weeks out after Bayern Munich injury

Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer is expected to miss at least six weeks after suffering a partial tear to a tendon in his right foot during Saturday’s 2-1 Bundesliga win over Mainz.

The club confirmed on Sunday that medical examinations had diagnosed the injury, but did not give a definite timetable for the 40-year-old goalkeeper’s return.

According to Sky Germany, Neuer’s absence is likely to continue until the end of 2026. The injury represents a major setback for Bayern, who had only recently welcomed their experienced goalkeeper back into the team.

Neuer was forced off before half-time against Mainz after being hurt while dealing with an incident inside the penalty area. His place was taken by substitute goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, who completed the match.

The latest problem affects the same foot that has caused Neuer difficulties in the past. Those issues kept him out of several Bayern matches before he returned to action against Atletico de Madrid in the Champions League.

The timing of the injury adds to the uncertainty surrounding Neuer’s future. His contract with Bayern Munich runs until the summer of 2027, but there has been speculation that the Germany international could retire at the end of the current season.

Neuer made Bundesliga history against Mainz despite the setback. At 40 years and 225 days, he became the oldest player to appear for Bayern in a Bundesliga match.

His injury now leaves Bayern without their captain for a significant period, while the club has yet to confirm how long he will remain unavailable.
