USM Alger secured their second CAF Super Cup on Sunday with a convincing 3-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, strengthening Algeria’s record in the competition and earning the club a prize of $500,000 (about €448,791.6).
The Algerian side controlled the final in South Africa and deservedly overcame Mamelodi Sundowns in front of their home supporters. Lamine N’Diaye’s team adopted a direct, uncomplicated approach and made the most of their opportunities.
USM Alger took the lead after only four minutes. Ahmed Khaldi created the opening with determined work down the right before sending a cut-back into the area, where Zakaria Draoui finished to put the Algerian club ahead.
Mamelodi Sundowns levelled in the 25th minute from the penalty spot. Achref Abada was penalised after a VAR review found that he had clearly handled the ball inside the area.
USM Alger restored their advantage before half-time. Imadeddine Azzi’s header struck the crossbar and Saadi Radouani reacted quickest to the rebound, turning it into a second goal for the Rouge et Noir in the 37th minute.
Khaldi then added the decisive third goal 10 minutes after the interval. The forward converted a pass from substitute Aime Tendeng in the 55th minute, giving USM Alger a two-goal cushion they maintained until the final whistle.
Second title for USM Alger
The victory means USM Alger have won the CAF Super Cup for a second time, following their previous triumph in 2023. On both occasions, the Algiers club reached the final after winning the CAF Confederation Cup.
USM Alger’s latest success also takes Algeria’s total number of CAF Super Cup victories to three. The country’s other title was won by ES Setif in 2015.
Alongside adding another major honour to the club’s record, USM Alger will receive $500,000 in prize money. The amount is equivalent to approximately €448,791.6.
The final was decided by the Algerian side’s efficient attacking play, with Draoui, Radouani and Khaldi all finding the net. Mamelodi Sundowns were able to respond only once, through the penalty awarded after Abada’s handball, as USM Alger completed a clear victory in Pretoria.
