Johnny Cardoso return strengthens Atletico Madrid before Barcelona showdown

Atletico de Madrid have received a significant boost with the return of midfielder Johnny Cardoso for Sunday’s meeting with Barcelona at the Metropolitano Stadium.

The two sides will face each other on 08 November 2026 with the chance to move clear at the top of La Liga before the international break. Both teams, however, are dealing with injuries, while several players remain in the final stages of their recoveries and could become available for the match.

Cardoso has trained with the Atletico first-team squad and has been given medical clearance, according to the Catalan newspaper Sport. His return gives Diego Simeone another option in midfield.

The United States midfielder missed the World Cup held in his country after undergoing ankle surgery. Simeone subsequently reintroduced him gradually in an attempt to prevent a further setback.

Cardoso’s involvement increased steadily before he reached his best level in the Madrid derby against Real Madrid, when he completed the full match. He then started three consecutive games, demonstrating that he remains an important player for the Argentine manager when fully fit.

Barcelona’s defensive concerns

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick will hope to benefit from a similar return to fitness, although his need is in defence rather than midfield.

Eric Garcia is expected to be included in the squad and could play some part if required. His availability would provide Flick with some relief amid the problems affecting Barcelona’s back line.

Pau Cubarsi is currently the only established defender considered to be in good physical condition, with the rest of the defensive unit facing fitness issues.

Atletico will also be without two important players. Captain Koke is unavailable, while Cuti Romero, one of the club’s major defensive signings and a central figure in the rebuilding of the back line, is also suffering from a muscle injury.

Barcelona’s absences are more numerous. Xavi Espart, Jules Kounde and Andreas Christensen are missing in defence, while Rodri and Dani Olmo are unavailable in midfield.

Roony Bardghji will also remain out for the rest of the season.

The meeting at the Metropolitano therefore brings together two teams seeking first place before the international interval, but both managers must manage substantial selection problems. Atletico can at least welcome back Cardoso, while Barcelona are waiting to see whether Garcia can return in time to offer defensive cover.
