La Liga has rejected a blanket postponement of the next round of fixtures in Spain’s top two divisions following the death of Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel.
The 30-year-old died after a serious collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a Segunda Division match this week.
The decision was announced on Thursday after the Spanish players’ union AFE and several clubs called for the entire round of matches to be suspended as a mark of respect.
A joint statement from La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said: “He will always remain in our memory, as Spanish football comes together to honour the memory of Jesus de Miguel.”
The organisations confirmed that the upcoming round would instead be dedicated to the former Tenerife player, with clubs, players and supporters standing in solidarity with his family, team-mates and everyone connected with Tenerife.
An exceptional mourning protocol will be introduced at every stadium. There will be a minute’s silence before each match, while play will stop completely in the ninth minute in tribute to the shirt number worn by Jesus de Miguel.
However, a small number of matches directly linked to the tragedy have been postponed.
Those fixtures are Castellon against Eibar, Granada against Tenerife and Andorra against Mallorca in Segunda Division, as well as the women’s match between Costa Adeje Tenerife and Deportivo Alaves.
The postponed fixtures involving Tenerife and Mallorca had been scheduled as follows: Granada against Tenerife in Segunda Division on 7 November 2026, followed by Andorra against Mallorca in the same competition on 8 November 2026.
The joint statement concluded with the message: “United in grief and remembrance.”
The decision means the wider programme in both divisions will go ahead, but every match will include the tribute to Jesus de Miguel. Tribute events will involve the clubs and supporters across the grounds, while the ninth-minute stoppage will provide a shared moment of remembrance throughout Spanish football.
AFE had joined calls for a complete suspension of the round after the fatal incident, while clubs also requested that all scheduled fixtures be called off. La Liga and the RFEF instead opted for a combination of selected postponements and a league-wide commemoration.
