Morocco claimed a second successive victory at the FIFA U15 World Cup on Sunday, beating Costa Rica 4-2, while Tunisia defeated the Democratic Republic of the Congo 3-1 in a north African and Congolese meeting.
Congo-Brazzaville were also in action but suffered a 4-2 defeat by Spain, despite having opened their campaign with a win over Tajikistan.
The latest round of results followed morning victories for Algeria, Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea. Attention then turned to Morocco and the two African sides competing in Group D, as the young players continued their introduction to international football in an eight-a-side tournament.
Morocco continue unbeaten run
At the Hovsan Sports Complex in Baku, Morocco followed Saturday’s 2-0 win against the Philippines with another victory, overcoming Costa Rica 4-2.
Safouane Bellamine and Said Noufii scored in the opening match against the Philippines, and the result against Costa Rica means the Atlas Cubs have now scored six goals in their first two games.
Karim Meftal’s side were due to return to action later on Sunday against Belize as they aimed to extend their winning run.
Tunisia also made it two wins from two by beating the Democratic Republic of the Congo 3-1 in Group D.
Amine Antoul and Ayoub Nouri were among the scorers for the Carthage Eagles, with goalkeeper Mohamed Ali Boughanmi also finding the net.
Tunisia had begun the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Nepal. The result against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, meanwhile, left Zico Tumba’s Leopards with two defeats, following Saturday’s 3-2 loss to El Salvador.
Congo-Brazzaville beaten by Spain
Congo-Brazzaville were involved in a closely contested match but Spain eventually secured a 4-2 win.
The Young Red Devils had made a positive start to the competition the previous day, defeating Tajikistan 3-2.
Sunday’s schedule had not yet finished for Tunisia or the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Tunisia were still to play Guinea-Bissau, while Congo-Brazzaville faced Brazil, described as one of the strongest opponents in their group.
Morocco’s next match was against Belize, with multiple fixtures being played each day as part of the demanding schedule at the first edition of the FIFA U15 World Cup and Festival.
The tournament is giving the young players more than the chance to compete for results. The matches are also allowing them to encounter different styles of football and gain international experience from an early age.
