Cedric Bakambu scored twice as San Diego FC fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Seattle Sounders in Major League Soccer on Sunday.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo international struck his first brace of the season, helping San Diego claim a point after Seattle had taken control of the match.
Seattle moved ahead shortly after half-time when Dejan Joveljic scored in the 50th minute. Sebastian Gomez doubled the visitors’ advantage five minutes later, leaving San Diego with a difficult task.
Bakambu began the comeback in the 60th minute. His initial penalty was saved by the Seattle goalkeeper, but the forward reacted quickest to convert the rebound and reduce the deficit.
With the match deep into stoppage time, San Diego were awarded another penalty. Bakambu took responsibility again and scored in the sixth additional minute to complete the comeback and secure a share of the points.
The 33-year-old, who started the match and is nicknamed “Bakagoal”, now has five goals in MLS this season.
His performance stood out during a difficult period for San Diego FC, who remain on a disappointing run of results. The brace also underlined the importance of the former Olympique de Marseille forward to the team’s attack.
Bakambu’s goalscoring form could provide encouragement for the Democratic Republic of the Congo before the national team’s next international commitments.
San Diego FC will next play their 33rd league match of the season against Vancouver Whitecaps. The match will provide another opportunity for Bakambu and his team-mates to build on the point earned against Seattle Sounders.
