Kaizer Chiefs knocked out of CAF Confederation Cup by Red Arrows on penalties

Kaizer Chiefs were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup after Red Arrows held their nerve in a 3-2 penalty shoot-out at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The match finished 1-0 to the South African side after Bradley Cross’ second-half header, leaving the aggregate score at 1-1. But the Zambian visitors prevailed from the spot to end Kaizer Chiefs’ campaign and add to the pressure on coach Fernando da Cruz.

Da Cruz made a surprise change in goal, recalling Bruce Bvuma for his first start of the season after Renaldo Leanerr was ruled out through injury. Brandon Petersen and Lebohang Maboe were also named among the substitutes after returning to the matchday squad for the first time since before the international break.

Kaizer Chiefs began strongly as they looked to overturn their first-leg defeat. Thulani Mabaso came close after 11 minutes, but the Red Arrows goalkeeper kept out his powerful effort.

Red Arrows only needed a draw to progress in Durban and were content to defend deep and absorb the pressure. Kaizer Chiefs, however, remained capable of threatening on the counter-attack.

The home side struggled to make the most of their opportunities in the final third. Pule Mmodi headed wide at the far post after a promising move, while Wandile Duba’s first touch failed him when he broke through on goal.

Kaizer Chiefs continued to dominate possession and territory after the interval, with Red Arrows largely confined to their own half. Da Cruz made his first substitution shortly before the hour, sending on Mfundo Vilakazi for Faiz Abrahams.

The equaliser on aggregate finally arrived in the 65th minute. Vilakazi delivered a free-kick into the penalty area and Cross rose above his marker to head past the goalkeeper.

Red Arrows responded by introducing Ricky Banda and Norris Kalamba as they looked to freshen up their side. Da Cruz also made a double change, bringing on Ethan Chislett and Velebayi.

Chislett immediately created an opening for Mduduzi Shabalala, who was sent through on goal but could only shoot straight at the goalkeeper. The substitute then set up Velebayi, who lifted his effort over the crossbar.

Those missed chances sent the tie to penalties, where Red Arrows held their composure to win 3-2 and send Kaizer Chiefs out of the competition.

Kaizer Chiefs started with Bvuma, Cross, Moloisane, Miguel, Frosler, Mmodi, Mthethwa, Mabaso, Shabalala, Duba and Abrahams.

The substitutes were Petersen, Kwinika, Maboe, Velebayi, Chislet, Dortley, Vilakazi, Ighodaro and Nkgwesa.
