Manchester City survive Sunderland fightback in eight-goal Etihad thriller

Manchester City held off a determined Sunderland comeback to win 5-3 in one of the Premier League’s most entertaining matches of the season so far at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon.

City took the lead after only 10 minutes when Enzo Fernandez attempted a free-kick from an ambitious angle. His effort went straight towards goal and caught Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs off guard, squeezing inside the near post.

Sunderland responded almost immediately. Enzo Le Fee found Brian Brobbey with a perfectly weighted pass behind the City defence, allowing the striker to shoot calmly into the corner and level the score.

The hosts restored their advantage midway through the first half after Sunderland lost possession in a dangerous position. Rayan Cherki collected the ball inside the area, made room for himself and drove a low finish into the bottom corner.

Brobbey then struck again in the 33rd minute to bring Sunderland level for a second time. Thomas Meunier had moved unnoticed behind the City defence before sending the ball across the area, leaving Brobbey with a simple finish into an empty net.

The frantic first half was not over. Following a scramble inside the Sunderland penalty area, Antoine Semenyo reacted fastest to fire Manchester City back in front and send the hosts into the interval 3-1 ahead.

City extended their lead shortly after the restart. Semenyo produced another outstanding finish, directing the ball into the far corner to make it 4-2 and appear to put the result beyond Sunderland.

The visitors, though, continued to threaten. Brobbey completed his hat-trick in the 59th minute when he tapped the ball home, reducing Sunderland’s deficit to 4-3 and ensuring a tense finish.

Sunderland came close to an equaliser when Dan Ballard beat City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the air. Ruben Dias intervened at the crucial moment, clearing the ball off the line to preserve City’s lead.

Manchester City eventually settled the contest with nine minutes remaining. Erling Haaland made up for an earlier missed opportunity by scoring the hosts’ fifth goal, finally giving City enough breathing room to secure all three points.
