Nigeria’s Falconets suffer late heartbreak against Colombia to exit U-20 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria side have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the quarter-finals on Sunday.

The Falconets, Africa’s sole remaining representatives in the competition, fought bravely throughout the encounter at the Stadion Miejski ŁKS Łódź and looked set to take the game deep into the closing stages before a late Colombian strike ended their impressive campaign.

Nigeria entered the quarter-final with growing confidence after producing a remarkable run in the tournament. The West Africans had made headlines by thrashing New Caledonia on the final matchday of the group stage before eliminating England in the round of 16, raising hopes of another memorable run on the global stage.

Against Colombia, however, the Falconets were made to work for every opportunity as both teams battled for control of the contest.

Moses Aduku’s players remained competitive for the majority of the match and managed to keep Colombia from finding a breakthrough during the regular 90 minutes. Nigeria’s disciplined approach kept the South Americans frustrated as the Falconets continued to defend their chances of progressing to the semi-finals.

However, the complexion of the game changed in the 77th minute when Kafayat Mafisere was shown a red card, leaving Nigeria with 10 players for the crucial final stages.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Falconets refused to collapse and continued to hold their own against Colombia. Nigeria’s players displayed tremendous resilience as they attempted to force the match towards extra time.

But the late stages ultimately proved decisive.

With the match heading towards the final whistle, Colombia found the breakthrough in the 92nd minute through Valerin Loboa. The late goal delivered a devastating blow to Nigeria, who had battled for almost the entire encounter to keep their World Cup dream alive.

The Falconets were unable to produce a response in the remaining moments as Colombia held on to secure their place in the semi-finals.

For Moses Aduku and his players, the defeat brings an end to Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign, despite an impressive run that saw them emerge as Africa’s last representatives in the tournament.

The Falconets may have fallen at the quarter-final stage, but their performances in Poland gave African football supporters plenty to dream about as Nigeria once again demonstrated its ability to compete among the world’s best at youth level.
