Kaizer Chiefs held by Golden Arrows for fourth draw in five matches

Kaizer Chiefs were held to a goalless draw by Golden Arrows, extending their run to four draws in their past five games.

The result leaves Amakhosi fourth in the table, but their deficit to leaders Sundowns has increased to seven points. Sundowns also have a game in hand.

Fernando Da Cruz made three changes to his starting XI, with Brandon Petersen and Wandile Duba unavailable because of injury. Renaldo Leaner and Faiz Abrahams came into the team for their first starts.

Golden Arrows created the clearer chances early on and should have taken the lead after nine minutes.

Junior Sede Dion was played through, but Leaner produced an excellent save to deny him and keep Chiefs level.

Arrows went close again in the 20th minute when Osborn Maluleke delivered a fine cross towards Dion. The forward, however, failed to make clean contact with the ball from close range.

Chiefs were then awarded a chance to go ahead from the penalty spot after 32 minutes. Lebohang Maboe’s effort looked destined for the corner, but Thakasani Mbanjwa made a superb stop to push the ball on to the post.

The contest remained closely fought after the interval, with neither side able to establish control or create a sustained spell of pressure.

Chiefs increased the tempo during the final 15 minutes after making several substitutions. Mfundo Vilakazi came closest to breaking the deadlock, but his volley from a cross struck the crossbar.

Golden Arrows had one last opportunity to claim all three points, only for a long-range effort to fly wide of the post.
