Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid: Mbappe backed to score in key La Liga derby

Atletico Madrid host Real Madrid on 20 September 2026, with kick-off scheduled for 14:15 GMT, in a derby billed as the biggest La Liga fixture of the season so far.

Both clubs are trying to stay in touch with leaders FC Barcelona, making the meeting an important early test in the title race. Sports betting expert and Cameroonian journalist Arthur Wandji has set out his predictions for the match.

Atletico go into the game in strong form after beating Osasuna 4-0, following a 3-0 victory over Real Sociedad. Diego Simeone’s side have collected 13 points from their opening six league matches, despite the disruption caused by the Julian Alvarez saga during the summer.

Real Madrid have two more points, having won five of their six league games. Their recent performances have been less convincing, however, including a narrow 3-2 victory over Elche.

The Madrid manager will be seeking greater stability from a side that have won only four of their past nine away matches in official competitions. Atletico will be without Alvarez and Pablo Barrios, while Real Madrid travel with a largely preserved squad.

Recent form is listed as Atletico Madrid: W/W/L/L/W and Real Madrid: W/W/W/L/W.

Key statistics and betting options

Ten of Atletico’s 14 league goals this season have come after half-time. They have also won the corner count in four of their past six league matches.

Ten of Real Madrid’s last 11 away wins in La Liga on a Sunday have included a clean sheet. The previous three meetings between the clubs have produced an average of eight corners.

Kylian Mbappe has continued his form after a record-breaking World Cup, scoring eight goals in seven appearances in all competitions for Real Madrid this season, including seven in the league.

The recommended markets include more than 9.5 corners at 1.58, no goal within 10 seconds of a corner at 1.31, Mbappe to score at 1.71, both teams to score at 1.42, and Atletico Madrid or a draw at 1.87.

The main corner prediction is for more than 9.5 in the match, priced at 1.58. The expected intensity on the flanks, Atletico’s record of winning the corner count in four of their six home matches, and the pressure on both teams to keep pace with FC Barcelona are viewed as likely to create a high number of blocked crosses and defensive interventions.

A 2-1 or 1-2 scoreline occurring during the match is priced at 1.81. The prediction reflects the expectation of a closely fought game in which either team could edge ahead through Atletico’s home strength and second-half efficiency or Real Madrid’s attacking quality.

Mbappe is the recommended goalscorer at 1.71. His pace and movement could exploit gaps in Atletico’s defensive block, while his current form makes him the leading candidate to score despite his previous record against this opponent not always favouring his teams.

Odds may change.
