Alexis Mac Allister ‘very sad’ over Liverpool contract uncertainty

Alexis Mac Allister says he is “very sad” that Liverpool have not offered him a new contract, although the midfielder insists he will continue to give everything to the club until his final day at Anfield.

The Argentina international was speaking before Liverpool’s Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, as uncertainty continues over his long-term future.

Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton in June 2023 on a five-year contract. While Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch have both agreed new deals with the club this year, Liverpool have not made a similar move with the 27-year-old.

“I received news that the club is not in a position to offer me a new contract, which naturally leaves me feeling very sad,” Mac Allister said, according to the BBC.

“Everyone can see that I give 100% for this club every day in training and in matches. Of course, I can play excellent games and poor games like any player, but I always give my best.”

Mac Allister, who helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup, said he was pleased to see Szoboszlai and Gravenberch rewarded with new contracts but admitted their renewals had also highlighted his own situation.

“Seeing Dominik and Ryan renew their contracts makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time I feel a little sad because I did not get my own renewal,” he added.

“Even so, there is still time. The fans do not need to worry because I will give everything I have until my last day here.”

Mac Allister has been linked with a possible move to Manchester City, but he said he had not spoken directly with Liverpool’s hierarchy about the decision not to extend his terms.

“We won the Premier League title together and we have gone through difficult times together,” he said. “I always give everything I have and we will see what happens.

“I do not think I need to prove anything, but I have to show the level at which I can compete, and I hope that happens.”

Despite the uncertainty, Mac Allister underlined his affection for Liverpool and the city.

“I adore this club and I love the fans,” he said. “I know very well that it is an incredible club and that this city has something very special. I am happy to be here.”

The midfielder also revealed that he had options to leave during the most recent summer transfer window, but decided to remain at Liverpool.

“There were options to leave in the summer, but I think I am currently at the right club and I have the right mentality to give 100% of my energy to it,” he said.

Mac Allister was an important member of the Liverpool side that won the Premier League in the 2024-25 season. However, he acknowledged that the previous campaign had been disappointing for both him and the team.

Liverpool finished fifth in the competition last season and manager Arne Slot was dismissed. Mac Allister made 55 appearances in all competitions during that campaign, compared with 49 appearances in the 2024-25 season.
