Mamelodi Sundowns edge Golden Arrows to reach MTN8 final against Orlando Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns reached the MTN8 final against Orlando Pirates after overcoming Golden Arrows on the away-goals rule following a 3-3 aggregate draw.

Abafana Bes’thende went into the second leg with a 1-0 victory from the opening meeting, while Sundowns had secured a 2-1 away win in the return fixture. The result set up a blockbuster final between Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

The decisive match began at a high tempo, with both teams aware that a place in the final was at stake. Sundowns and Golden Arrows showed attacking ambition from the opening minutes, creating chances as they looked for an early breakthrough.

Sundowns came close in the eighth minute when Cassius Mailula found space inside the penalty area. He took too long to release his shot, though, allowing the Golden Arrows defence to recover and clear the danger.

The visitors gradually took control of possession, while Golden Arrows attempted to use their pace on the counter-attack after winning the ball. As the first half progressed, Abafana Bes’thende adopted a more compact shape, making it increasingly difficult for Sundowns to play through them.

Sundowns eventually made their pressure count in the 31st minute. Mailula opened the scoring with a composed finish at the end of a well-worked move, with Marcelo Allende providing the assist.

The goal encouraged Sundowns to continue searching for a second, but Golden Arrows remained disciplined. Goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa was also called upon to make several important saves as the visitors protected their advantage.

Sundowns went into half-time with a 1-0 lead and resumed the second half in similar fashion, controlling the ball and pressing for another goal. They appeared to have doubled their advantage, but the referee ruled it out after deciding that Khulumani Ndamane had handled the ball.

Masandawana continued to attack in waves, yet Golden Arrows’ defence held firm and repeatedly frustrated their opponents.

Golden Arrows had an opportunity to restore parity in the 63rd minute. Ronaldo Van Neel delivered the ball into the box for Nhlanhla Gasa, but Gasa’s effort flew high over the crossbar.

The equaliser arrived seven minutes later. Van Neel again supplied the assist, with Junior Dion converting from close range to make it 1-1.

Sundowns responded quickly. After only a few minutes, the Tshwane giants regained the lead through Marcelo Allende, putting the visitors back in front.

Substitute Antonio Van Wyk then strengthened Sundowns’ position with a superb strike from outside the penalty area, beating Mbatha with what the report described as “a thing of beauty”.

Golden Arrows were left needing two goals to win the tie. They managed to pull one back through Philani Khumalo, but it was not enough to prevent Sundowns from advancing to the next round and securing their place in the MTN8 final.
