Ferran Torres rescues Paris Saint-Germain as Luis Enrique criticises referees

Ferran Torres scored twice on his Paris Saint-Germain debut to prevent a 2-0 defeat by Rennes, earning strong praise from manager Luis Enrique after the comeback draw.

Paris Saint-Germain were two goals behind at half-time after Szymanski opened the scoring in the ninth minute and Esteban Lepaul doubled Rennes’ advantage in the 38th minute.

Luis Enrique responded by making two changes at the start of the second half. One of them proved decisive as Torres replaced Ousmane Dembele and turned the match in Paris Saint-Germain’s favour.

The Spain international pulled one goal back in the 71st minute before completing the recovery with his second in the 82nd minute. Both goals came on his first appearance for the club.

“ He played very well, didn’t he? He scored two goals from two great passes by Fabian,” said Luis Enrique after the match. “I am especially happy with the players who came into a difficult game.”

The Paris Saint-Germain manager admitted his side had struggled to control Rennes during the opening 45 minutes.

“In the first half, we had a lot of problems controlling Rennes. They scored two very good goals. It was difficult,” he said.

“But as I said, it is important to see that many of the players on the bench, or even those who were not in the matchday squad, are ready.”

Luis Enrique added that the club’s recent signings were being brought in with a long-term plan, rather than being judged on an immediate run of results.

“We have signed players, but we are not worried about what they will do in one match, 10 matches or 20 matches,” he said. “We signed players to build a long-term relationship with them.

“This is very positive for Ferran, and we are very happy that he scored two great and beautiful goals.”

The manager appeared visibly serious at several points while standing on the touchline and was asked after the match why he had looked so frustrated. His explanation centred on his dissatisfaction with the officials.

“Because we had a meeting with the referees. They say they are going to do certain things, and then nothing happens. So yes, I was annoyed,” said Luis Enrique.

He also warned his players not to become complacent, insisting Paris Saint-Germain had not yet achieved anything despite their previous successes.

“Paris has won nothing, absolutely nothing. If you think about what you have won, you will win nothing,” he said.

“The most important thing for me is that there is no room for complacency; every day, in every training session and in every match, you have to prove that you are ready.

“Otherwise, it is easy to become arrogant because of previous successes. We are always looking to win, and that is why we have to leave our comfort zone. Is that clear?”

Asked whether Paris Saint-Germain could make another addition to the squad, Luis Enrique said the club remained open to further business despite being pleased with its transfer window.

“We had a very good transfer window, but we are still open to different possibilities,” he said. “We know how difficult it is to keep winning, and it is clear that we need to improve.”
