Newcastle close in on Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez

Newcastle United are close to signing Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez during the summer transfer window, with an agreement reportedly reached between the two clubs.

Sky Sports says Newcastle have made significant progress in negotiations for the Spain international, while discussions with the player are continuing. The remaining talks are expected to be completed this week, allowing the proposed transfer to move towards a conclusion.

Gonzalez joined Manchester City in January 2025 after spending a season and a half with Porto. The 23-year-old had made his name in Barcelona’s youth system before moving to Valencia on loan.

His transfer to Porto was made permanent in the summer of 2023. After his time in Portugal, Gonzalez moved to Manchester City, where he has since made 59 appearances and scored four goals.

The midfielder was involved in Manchester City’s opening match of the new campaign, coming on as a substitute for the final 11 minutes of the Community Shield match against Arsenal. He was an unused substitute in City’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth.

Manchester City won that match 2-1 against Bournemouth. Newcastle, meanwhile, began their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

Gonzalez’s potential move would see Newcastle add a player with experience of football in Spain, Portugal and England to their midfield options. However, the deal is not yet complete, with the final negotiations between the club and player still to be concluded.

Sky Sports’ report states that the agreement between Newcastle and Manchester City has already been reached. The focus is now on reaching an agreement with Gonzalez, with the expectation that the transfer can be finalised this week.

Gonzalez began his development at Barcelona before gaining senior experience during his loan spell at Valencia. He then established himself at Porto after joining the Portuguese club permanently in 2023, before making the move to Manchester City in January 2025.

Since arriving at the Etihad Stadium, he has featured 59 times for the club and found the net on four occasions. His latest appearances have come at the start of the current campaign, although he has not started either of Manchester City’s first two matches.

Newcastle’s season began with a point against Liverpool after the sides shared four goals. Manchester City collected all three points against Bournemouth, winning by two goals to one.

The proposed transfer therefore remains dependent on the completion of talks between Newcastle and Gonzalez, but the clubs have already reached an agreement over the move, according to Sky Sports.
