Gvardiol celebrates Manchester City win and warns of tough Crystal Palace test

Josko Gvardiol says Manchester City’s victory over Bournemouth in their opening Premier League match was the most important outcome, with the defender acknowledging the significance of starting the season positively after a period of change at the club.

Manchester City secured an exciting win against Bournemouth in the first round of the Premier League, extending their unbeaten run against their opponents to five matches. That sequence now consists of four victories and one draw, while City’s most recent defeat by Bournemouth came in November 2024, when they lost 2-1.

Gvardiol was pleased to see City come through a demanding opening fixture and highlighted the changes made by the team during the previous few weeks.

“Everyone is feeling proud at this moment. It is the opening game of the season and we know how important it is, especially with all the changes we have made over the past few weeks,” Gvardiol told English broadcaster Sky Sports.

The defender also scored in the closing seconds of the match, although he had to wait for the officials to confirm that the goal would stand.

“Honestly, I was pretty sure that I was not offside, but it was difficult. At that moment, all you can do is wait to see the referee’s reaction. I am happy that the goal was eventually given,” he said.

Gvardiol added that every match carries importance in England, while already looking ahead to City’s next assignment away from home against Crystal Palace.

“Every game is important, especially here in England. I think the most important thing is that we won today. We have another game, away from home against Crystal Palace, and it will be difficult as well,” he said.

Marcus Tavernier scored for Bournemouth, while Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol were credited with Manchester City’s goals.

The match also produced several notable individual details. Erling Haaland failed to score in Manchester City’s opening Premier League fixture for the first time in his career.

Rayan Cherki made an immediate impact after coming off the bench, creating two goals during a 30-minute appearance. His contribution helped City secure a successful start despite the wider changes taking place within the squad.

Egypt international Omar Marmoush did not feature, although he was named among the substitutes. His absence came as his future with the club remains unresolved, with a decision yet to be made over whether he will stay at Manchester City or leave for Tottenham.
