Arsenals title defence gets off to a flying start with Coventry City win
Arsenal began their Premier League title defence with a convincing 3-0 victory over Coventry City under manager Mikel Arteta.
The result gives Arsenal an emphatic opening to their attempt to retain the title they won last season, finishing above Manchester City.
Kai Havertz opened the scoring after 15 minutes, converting a low cross from Ricardo Calafiori. The Germany international met the delivery inside the penalty area and directed it into the net to give Arsenal an early advantage.
Arsenal continued to control the match and doubled their lead eight minutes later through Bukayo Saka.
Christos Tzolis sent a low pass across the penalty area from the left-hand side. Coventry City goalkeeper Carl Rushworth attempted to prevent the ball from reaching its intended destination, but his intervention only sent it towards Saka.
With the goal left unguarded, Saka finished from close range to make it 2-0 in the 23rd minute.
Coventry City were unable to respond before the interval, while Arsenal carried their two-goal advantage into the second half.
The third goal arrived four minutes after the restart. Ben White supplied the pass from the right side of the penalty area, finding Martin Ødegaard in a central position.
The Norway international struck a powerful effort that found the left side of the goal, completing the scoring in the 49th minute.
Ødegaard’s finish ensured Arsenal ended the match with a three-goal cushion and confirmed a strong start to their campaign as they seek to remain Premier League champions.
Havertz’s opener, Saka’s opportunistic finish and Ødegaard’s powerful effort accounted for all of Arsenal’s goals in the match.
