Arsenal begin Premier League title defence with comfortable win over Coventry

Arsenal started their defence of the Premier League title with a convincing 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at Emirates Stadium on Friday night.

Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard scored as the Gunners made a dominant opening to the campaign. Coventry, returning to the top flight after a 25-year absence, struggled to cope with Arsenal’s attacking quality for long periods.

Arsenal took control from the opening whistle and broke the deadlock after 15 minutes. Ben White switched play towards the left, where Riccardo Calafiori collected possession before sending a low cross into the penalty area. Havertz arrived to sweep the ball into the bottom corner.

The visitors’ difficult evening became worse eight minutes later. Arsenal created another overload on the left, allowing Christos Tzolis to deliver a cutback into the area. Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could only palm the ball back into play, leaving Saka with a straightforward finish into an unguarded net.

Coventry showed greater attacking intent towards the end of the first half and produced one of their better moves of the game around the edge of the Arsenal penalty area. Loum Tchaouna was unable to make the opportunity count, however, sending an overhead attempt onto the roof of the net.

Arsenal continued to dictate the match after the interval and added a third goal five minutes into the second half.

White and Saka combined on the right side of the penalty area before setting up Odegaard. The Norway international struck towards goal and the ball went in off Rushworth’s glove to give the champions a commanding advantage.

Tzolis then went close to scoring himself during another sustained spell of Arsenal pressure. Coventry failed to clear a corner and the new signing met the loose ball with a powerful first-time effort, but Rushworth reacted well to parry it away.

With Arsenal comfortably in front, manager Mikel Arteta made his first changes midway through the second half. Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke were introduced in place of Declan Rice and Saka.

Coventry continued to search for a consolation goal and came close five minutes from the end. A cross from the left found Jack Rudoni in the centre of the penalty area, but his header was gathered by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.

The result reflected the clear difference between the reigning champions and the side beginning life back in the Premier League. Arsenal’s title defence could hardly have started more positively, while Coventry were left to begin their return to English football’s elite division on the back foot.

Arsenal’s next three fixtures are away matches against Aston Villa, Chelsea and Sunderland.

Coventry City will host Hull City next before travelling to face Manchester City and then welcoming Brighton & Hove Albion.
