Abu Qir Fertilizers stun National Bank of Egypt in historic Premier League win

Abu Qir Fertilizers secured the first Egyptian Premier League victory in their history by beating National Bank of Egypt 1-0 in a dramatic opening-day result.

The match was played at Alexandria Stadium at 20:00 on the first day of the competition, with Ali Hussein scoring the only goal of the game for the newly promoted side.

Abu Qir Fertilizers reached the Premier League for the first time last season, becoming the 77th team to compete in the competition. They marked their arrival in the top flight with a victory which briefly sent them to the top of the table on three points after the opening day.

Their success was all the more notable given the balance of play. Abu Qir Fertilizers had only 18% possession, while National Bank of Egypt controlled 82% of the match under manager Ayman El Ramady.

National Bank of Egypt also created a significant number of shooting opportunities, attempting 32 efforts at the Abu Qir Fertilizers goal. However, goalkeeper Mahmoud Abdel Rahim “Genesh” produced an outstanding performance, making nine saves to keep his side in the contest.

The decisive moment arrived in the 59th minute. Ali Hussein broke away from beyond the halfway line after taking advantage of a defender’s fall. He continued towards goal before sending a low shot into the right-hand side of the net beyond goalkeeper Abdel Aziz El Balouty.

That goal proved enough to give Abu Qir Fertilizers a landmark victory, despite the considerable pressure applied by their opponents for long periods.

The result places the newly promoted club at the summit of the Egyptian Premier League with three points following the conclusion of the opening day’s fixtures. It also gives them an early boost ahead of their next match, when they will face Pyramids in the second round.

National Bank of Egypt will look to respond in their next fixture at Cairo Stadium, where they will host Zamalek.

For Abu Qir Fertilizers, the victory represents the first league win in the club’s history at this level. It was achieved through a combination of defensive resilience, Genesh’s saves and Ali Hussein’s decisive finish, despite National Bank of Egypt dominating possession and producing 32 attempts.
