Arsenal launch Premier League title defence with convincing Coventry win

Arsenal began their defence of the Premier League title with a 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at Emirates Stadium.

Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard were on target as Mikel Arteta’s side made a dominant start to the 2026-27 Premier League season.

The result gave the champions their first three points of the campaign ahead of their meeting with Aston Villa on 31 August. Coventry will look to open their account when they face Hull City on Saturday, 29 August.

The victory was also Arteta’s 150th in 249 Premier League matches as Arsenal manager.

Arsenal established control from the opening stages and immediately applied pressure to a Coventry side that spent long periods defending deep.

Saka and Christos Tzolis both threatened during the early exchanges, but Arsenal’s attacking pressure was rewarded in the 15th minute. Riccardo Calafiori delivered a low, short cross into the penalty area, where Havertz took possession before placing a composed finish into the bottom-right corner.

Arsenal continued to dictate the match after going ahead, with Saka repeatedly finding dangerous positions inside the Coventry area. The England winger doubled the advantage in the 23rd minute after the ball fell to him following a deflection. He drove a powerful low shot into the middle of the goal to make it 2-0.

Coventry attempted to respond and created a pair of openings through Loum Tchaouna. His long-range effort struck an Arsenal defender, while another attempt from outside the area flew narrowly over the crossbar.

The hosts also had chances to extend their lead before half-time. Ben White was played into the penalty area but delayed his shot, allowing Coventry’s defence to intervene. Declan Rice then sent a powerful effort from outside the box just wide of the post.

Arsenal went into the interval two goals ahead and resumed in similar fashion after the break.

They added a third goal in the 49th minute when Ødegaard took advantage of a fine pass from White. The Arsenal captain finished the move to put the result beyond reasonable doubt.

Arsenal continued to threaten as the second half progressed. Calafiori went clear and appeared set to score a fourth, but Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth produced an excellent save to keep his side in the contest.

Rushworth also denied a fierce attempt from Tzolis as Coventry faced sustained pressure. Arteta then made a number of substitutions, taking off Saka, Rice and Ødegaard to protect key players and give their replacements valuable minutes.

Coventry continued to search for a goal in the closing stages, but Arsenal retained control and prevented the visitors from reducing the deficit.

The champions therefore opened their title defence with a comprehensive victory, while Coventry’s first opportunity to earn points in the new Premier League season will come against Hull City.
