Strasbourg make €20m move for teenage defender Karim Coulibaly
Racing Club de Strasbourg have completed the signing of 19-year-old central defender Karim Coulibaly from Werder Bremen on a five-year contract.
The Alsace club confirmed the arrival on Friday, securing the services of the Germany Under-21 international after a breakthrough season in the Bundesliga. Coulibaly, who is of Ivorian origin, made 27 appearances for Werder Bremen last term and now joins Strasbourg as one of the club’s most significant investments of the summer.
Strasbourg have paid €20m for the defender, underlining their determination to build a competitive side around young players with substantial potential. The fee represents a major commitment to a player who, despite his age, already has experience at the highest level of German football.
The transfer takes Strasbourg’s summer spending to about €70m. However, the club’s financial position in the transfer market remains strongly positive, with sales since the beginning of the window generating close to €170m in revenue.
Coulibaly’s estimated value on Transfermarkt is €28m, €8m higher than the amount Strasbourg have committed to the deal. That assessment, combined with his Bundesliga experience, means the new signing arrives with the expectation of becoming an important part of the club’s defence.
Strasbourg will hope Coulibaly can establish himself quickly in their defensive system and develop into a central figure for the team. His five-year agreement reflects the club’s long-term approach, with the French side investing in a player they believe can make an immediate contribution while continuing to increase in value.
Before moving to Strasbourg, Coulibaly earned an annual salary of €380,000 at Werder Bremen, equivalent to 247,000,000 FCFA.
Werder Bremen are due to begin their Bundesliga campaign shortly with a home match against Freiburg. Ahead of that fixture, the available match odds list Werder Bremen at 3.40 to win, with the draw also priced at 3.40. Freiburg are rated favourites at 1.96.
Coulibaly’s departure leaves Werder Bremen without a player who featured 27 times in the Bundesliga last season, while Strasbourg add a young international defender to a squad being reshaped through heavy investment and significant transfer income.
