Rodri sets sights on ‘every title’ after arriving to complete Barcelona move
Rodri has arrived in Barcelona ahead of completing his transfer from Manchester City, saying that joining the Catalan club is a dream and that he wants to help them win the Champions League and every other available trophy.
The Spain midfielder travelled to the city on Monday evening after Barcelona and Manchester City reached a preliminary agreement for his transfer on Sunday. According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona will pay €60m in an initial fee, with a further €11m available in add-ons linked to the trophies the club wins.
The deal is one of Barcelona’s most significant moves of the summer transfer window. Rodri is expected to finalise the transfer after completing his medical and physical examinations on Tuesday morning, before signing his contract with the club.
A number of media organisations were waiting for the midfielder when he arrived in Barcelona. He briefly addressed reporters before heading to the hotel where he will stay until he moves into his new home.
Speaking about his arrival, Rodri said: “I’m happy to arrive, it’s been eventful days.. Happy to be here. Playing for Barcelona is a dream. We will aim to win the Champions League and everything available to us.”
The midfielder’s comments came before the formal completion of the transfer, with his medical tests and contract signing still to take place.
Barcelona’s agreement with Manchester City includes both a guaranteed payment and performance-related additions. The fixed €60m fee will be followed by up to €11m in variables, with those payments dependent on the titles Barcelona secures.
Rodri’s arrival marks the latest stage of a move that advanced rapidly over the previous two days. The preliminary agreement was reached on Sunday, he travelled to Barcelona on Monday and the final administrative steps are scheduled for Tuesday.
Until those procedures are completed, the transfer remains subject to the medical examinations and the signing of the contract. Rodri, however, has already made clear the scale of his ambitions after appearing before the waiting media.
His stated objective is to compete for every trophy available to Barcelona, with success in the Champions League specifically identified as a priority. The club will now proceed with the medical and physical checks before seeking to formalise the midfielder’s move from Manchester City.
