Ruben Neves’ late winner sends Al Hilal through and relieves pressure on Inzaghi
Ruben Neves rescued Al Hilal from a difficult night by scoring twice to secure victory over Al Raed and book the club’s place in the last 16 of the King’s Cup.
The Portugal midfielder opened the scoring from the penalty spot before producing a superb second goal in the closing stages, settling a match in which Al Hilal struggled to reach the expected level under manager Simone Inzaghi.
Al Hilal faced Al Raed on Monday evening in the last-32 stage of the competition and needed Neves’ intervention to overcome a stubborn opponent. His first goal gave the Saudi side the advantage, while his late strike finally ended any uncertainty over the outcome.
Neves took responsibility for the opening penalty and converted with confidence, continuing his impressive record from spot-kicks. The goal put Al Hilal ahead but did little to ease the team’s wider problems during the match.
Inzaghi’s side were below their best in attack and found it difficult to impose control on the contest. Al Raed remained capable of finding a way back into the game, with the narrow advantage leaving the tie in doubt for much of the second half.
That uncertainty continued until the 81st minute, when Neves stepped forward once again. The midfielder struck a fine shot to score his second goal and guide Al Hilal towards the next round, prompting celebrations from his team-mates and the supporters.
The significance of Neves’ goals extended beyond the final result. Their timing was crucial, particularly because Al Hilal produced a subdued performance for long periods and failed to provide the attacking display expected by their supporters.
The result also offered relief to Inzaghi. The Italian manager would have faced further criticism had Al Hilal failed to beat Al Raed, but Neves’ decisive contribution prevented a more difficult scenario and secured the club’s progress in the competition.
Al Hilal will now continue their King’s Cup campaign in the last 16, with Neves’ performance providing the difference in a tie that had threatened to become an uncomfortable evening for the club.
