Chelsea welcome Argentina international Valentin Barco on deal until 2033

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Argentina international Valentin Barco from Strasbourg, with the 21-year-old midfielder agreeing a contract that runs until 2033.

The Premier League club announced the move on Sunday during the current summer transfer window, describing Barco as a versatile midfielder who will join new manager Xabi Alonso and his Chelsea team-mates later in pre-season.

In a statement, Chelsea said: “It is with pleasure that Chelsea Football Club can confirm the signing of Argentine international Valentin Barco from Strasbourg.”

The club added: “The versatile midfielder has signed a contract until 2033 and will join head coach Xabi Alonso and his new team-mates later in pre-season.”

Barco began his career with Boca Juniors in Argentina, progressing through the club’s academy before making his professional debut at the age of 16. During his time with Boca Juniors, he won several honours before moving to England in 2024 to join Brighton & Hove Albion.

His spell on the Sussex coast included loan periods with Sevilla and Strasbourg. Barco then completed a permanent move to Strasbourg after the 2024-25 season, a campaign in which his performances helped the French club secure European football.

He contributed to 12 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions last season. His form at club level also helped him earn a place in Argentina’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Barco currently has five international caps for Argentina.

Chelsea said the player’s arrival would add to their midfield options as preparations continue for the new season under Alonso. The Spaniard is set to work with Barco once the midfielder joins the squad later in pre-season, following his move from Strasbourg.

The transfer completes a rapid progression for Barco, who entered professional football as a teenager at Boca Juniors, moved to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2024 and subsequently developed his experience in both Spain and France through loan spells.

His time at Strasbourg proved particularly significant. The club’s statement noted that Barco’s strong 2024-25 campaign played a part in their qualification for European competition, before his permanent transfer to Chelsea was confirmed this summer.

Chelsea concluded their announcement by welcoming the Argentina international to Stamford Bridge.
