Azzedine Ounahi faces defining week as Barcelona and Real Betis pursue Morocco midfielder

Barcelona have revived their interest in Azzedine Ounahi as uncertainty grows over Frenkie de Jong’s fitness and the possibility of Marc Casado leaving during the current transfer window.

De Jong could be sidelined for several months because of injury, prompting Barcelona to examine the possibility of signing a low-cost midfielder. The potential departure of Casado would further increase the need for reinforcements in that area of the squad.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are assessing a range of possible scenarios and have drawn up a list of potential targets in several positions in case unexpected problems arise.

Ounahi, who is 26, is now among the midfielders being considered by the Catalan club. His availability could make him an attractive option because Girona’s relegation may lead to the Morocco international leaving for a fee of about 10m euros.

That figure is viewed as manageable for Barcelona, particularly if they proceed with a possible sale of Casado for about 40m euros. The club are therefore weighing whether Ounahi could provide an affordable solution while they respond to the uncertainty surrounding their midfield.

However, Barcelona face strong competition for the player. Real Betis have shown decisive interest and are prepared to offer a significant amount in an effort to complete the deal.

The former Olympique de Marseille player is keen to resolve his future quickly, meaning the coming week could prove decisive in determining his next club.

Ounahi previously attracted widespread attention from Barcelona after his impressive performances for Morocco at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. His displays during the tournament led to his name being linked with the Catalan side in late 2022 and early 2023.

Barcelona’s renewed consideration comes as the club prepare for several possible changes in midfield. De Jong’s expected absence for an extended period would leave the side needing additional cover, while Casado’s potential exit could create another gap in the squad.

The club are consequently examining the market for a player who would strengthen the position without requiring a major financial outlay. Ounahi’s estimated price, together with the possibility of funds arriving from Casado’s sale, has placed him back on Barcelona’s list of options.

Real Betis’ willingness to push strongly for the midfielder could now complicate Barcelona’s plans. With Ounahi hoping for a swift decision and interest from both clubs, his future is expected to become clearer in the next few days.
