Atlanta United step up pursuit of Napoli striker Romelu Lukaku

Atlanta United have opened negotiations to sign Napoli striker Romelu Lukaku during the current summer transfer window, with talks between all parties already under way.

According to football agent Sacha Tavolieri, Lukaku is not considered part of Napoli manager Massimiliano Allegri’s plans for the club’s sporting project. That situation has increased the possibility of the Belgium international leaving the Italian side before the transfer window closes.

Atlanta United are pushing strongly to complete a deal for the experienced forward, although discussions remain at an early stage. Lukaku has indicated that he is willing to leave Napoli, but no agreement has yet been reached between the clubs or the player.

The 33-year-old is entering the final year of his Napoli contract. He joined the club from Chelsea in the summer of 2024 on a three-year deal.

Lukaku played a part in Napoli’s Serie A title-winning campaign in the 2024-25 season. However, his role was reduced significantly during the following campaign because of injuries, and he made only five league appearances.

He is no longer regarded as a key member of Napoli’s starting line-up, particularly with Rasmus Højlund among the club’s attacking options. Napoli are preparing to reshape their squad under Allegri, and Lukaku’s potential departure forms part of that wider process.

Reports indicate Napoli could accept a fee of about €10m for the striker. The main obstacle for interested clubs is expected to be his salary, which is reported to be €8m per year.

That wage level could complicate negotiations for Atlanta United, despite the American club’s determination to secure the transfer. The two sides are continuing to explore the terms of a possible move, with Atlanta United hoping to conclude the deal during the current transfer window.

Lukaku arrived at Napoli from Chelsea in 2024 and helped the club win the Italian league in his first season. His limited involvement in the subsequent campaign, combined with Allegri’s plans and the presence of Højlund in attack, has left his future at the club uncertain.

For now, the negotiations remain in their initial phase. Lukaku has given his approval to a move away from Napoli, but the financial conditions surrounding his contract will need to be resolved before Atlanta United can complete the signing.
