Adeyemi’s Barcelona debut brings promise and unfinished business for Flick

Karim Adeyemi’s first appearance for Barcelona offered an emphatic display of his pace and personality, but Hansi Flick will be looking for greater precision from the Germany forward after a 45-minute outing against Birmingham.

Adeyemi made his Barcelona debut by repeatedly showing the explosive acceleration that persuaded the club of his potential. He also attempted his first diagonal passes and was willing to demand the ball, signalling that he intends to play an influential role on the flanks.

However, his opening half was defined more by brief flashes than by a complete performance. According to Spanish newspaper AS, the player appeared short of training, while fatigue may also have affected his decision-making.

At times, Adeyemi selected the wrong pass during transitions. On other occasions, he accelerated the play when the situation called for greater composure. He also struggled to finish some of the opportunities that came his way.

The performance was therefore less a confirmation of his full ability than an indication of what he may eventually offer Barcelona. His speed was clear, as was his willingness to take responsibility and attempt to make a difference, but those positive qualities were accompanied by hurried play and a lack of accuracy.

Flick is not thought to be overly concerned by those shortcomings at this stage of the pre-season. Adeyemi has only been training for a short period, and the demands of preparation mean the forward is still working towards his best condition.

The Barcelona manager has already made clear that he believes the Germany international can produce considerably more. Flick said: “He has much greater potential than he showed. In training I have seen a better Karim.”

That assessment also sets out the immediate challenge for Adeyemi. The debut demonstrated the raw ingredients available to Barcelona: pace, attacking intensity, the desire to receive the ball and the ability to provide competition on the wings.

Flick also expects the player to add depth and greater dynamism to the squad, while offering another option capable of changing matches from wide areas. Those qualities were visible in glimpses against Birmingham, even if they were not yet delivered consistently.

For now, Adeyemi’s first outing should be viewed as a statement of intent rather than a definitive measure of his level. He showed he has the speed and character to seek involvement, but his passing choices, timing and finishing all require refinement.

The Germany forward’s true level remains to be seen. Flick, however, has already identified the areas he wants Adeyemi to work on after his first appearance, as Barcelona wait to see the more complete version of their new player.
