Barcelona give Ferran Torres one week to decide future as Paris Saint-Germain monitor situation

Barcelona are refusing to enter a bidding war to keep Ferran Torres, despite growing interest in the Spain international from several clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain.

According to Catalan newspaper Sport, Barcelona will offer Torres a new contract based on the club’s established salary structure. The proposed terms would come into effect from September, and the club has no intention of improving its offer if the forward receives more lucrative proposals elsewhere.

Barcelona’s position is that the next move rests with Torres. He is expected to decide during the coming week whether he wants to remain at the club or ask to leave, with the transfer window entering its decisive stage.

The club still wants to retain the 25-year-old and regards him as a suitable player for its sporting project. His attacking ability and standing within the dressing room are both valued, while his performances last season helped him contribute a significant number of goals.

However, Barcelona do not believe any player is indispensable. If Torres chooses to move on, the club will be prepared to negotiate his departure for “a fair value” rather than block the transfer at all costs.

Barcelona paid 55m euros to sign Torres at a difficult time financially for the club. His market value subsequently increased after he impressed at the most recent World Cup and won the tournament with Spain.

Despite the reports linking him with Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona have not received any official contact from the French club. Their information about PSG’s interest has so far come through media reports rather than direct communication.

Should Torres decide to leave, Barcelona will attempt to secure the greatest possible financial return. There is a belief within the club that forwards command high values in the transfer market, and the minimum figure for completing a deal would be the recovery of the 55m euros originally paid for him.

The stance reflects Barcelona’s desire to avoid being forced into an inflated renewal package while also protecting the value of one of their important attacking players. The club is therefore willing to make its proposal, but will not compete financially with clubs offering substantially higher wages.

Torres’ departure would create a significant problem for manager Hansi Flick. Barcelona would be left without a specialised centre-forward, apart from young Egyptian striker Hamza Abdelkarim.

That would increase Flick’s demands for the signing of a new number nine, although finding an available player of that profile is considered particularly difficult in the current transfer market. Barcelona must therefore balance its preference to keep Torres with the need to prepare for the possibility that he decides to pursue a new challenge.
