World Cup 2026: Fresh report uncovers extraordinary link between Messi and Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal
A fresh coincidence linking Barcelona great Lionel Messi and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal has captured attention after a Spanish report revealed an unexpected connection between their names, adding another chapter to the growing list of similarities between the two stars.
According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, the latest discovery comes after the famous photograph of Messi holding a baby Lamine Yamal resurfaced around the world once the youngster established himself as Barcelona’s newest star.
The image, taken when Yamal was only a few months old, has become one of football’s most iconic photographs following the Spain international’s rapid rise through the ranks at the Catalan club.
Long list of similarities
Mundo Deportivo noted that the photograph is just one of several remarkable parallels between the pair.
Like Messi, Yamal developed through Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy before earning an early promotion to the first team. Both players also wore the club’s No. 19 shirt before later inheriting the famous No. 10 jersey and becoming key figures for both Barcelona and their respective national teams.
The report also highlighted another symbolic connection, noting that Yamal is set to play in the World Cup final at the age of 19, while Messi will feature at the age of 39, with the match scheduled for July 19 — a date that mirrors the shirt number both players previously wore.
Unusual name discovery
The Spanish publication said the most surprising coincidence involves the Argentine’s full name.
According to the report, taking the first two letters from each part of Messi’s full name — LIonel, ANdrés and MEssi — spells LAMINE.
Mundo Deportivo described the discovery as “crazy”, adding that trying the same exercise with other names shows how unusual the coincidence is.
The newspaper believes the latest finding adds another intriguing chapter to the connection between Messi and Yamal, whose careers remain closely tied through Barcelona and the club’s famed La Masia academy, with Catalonia continuing to provide the backdrop to both footballing stories.
