Lamine Yamal’s father, Munir Nasraoui, has revealed that he will miss Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final against Argentina after deciding against travelling to the United States because of a medical condition.

Although the teenage forward has been cheered on throughout the tournament by his mother, younger brother and girlfriend, Nasraoui has remained in Spain, saying the journey could pose serious health risks.

Health concerns rule out long journey

Speaking to Spanish television channel Antena 3, Nasraoui explained that his epilepsy and the medication he takes daily made travelling across the Atlantic an unsafe option.

“I think Los Angeles is around 18,000 kilometers away from us, and it’s very difficult not to be there,” he said. “But I have epilepsy and take a lot of medication every day.”

He also admitted that the emotional nature of such a high-profile occasion could trigger a seizure.

“Sometimes I have epileptic seizures. Here I can stay calm, but over there the stress and emotions could cause an episode. I don’t want to create problems, so it’s better that I stay home and watch the match on television.”

Pride from afar

Despite being unable to watch his son’s World Cup campaign in person, Nasraoui said he was delighted by Spain’s run to the final and proud of Yamal’s achievements.

“I’m very proud and grateful for what Spain has achieved,” he said. “I’m happy for my son and for all the players who have done a fantastic job.”

He also shared details of an emotional conversation with the Barcelona star after Spain secured their place in the final.

“Lamine called me and told me he was proud of me. I told him that I’m even more proud of him. Thank you to everyone who has helped him throughout his journey.”

Yamal eyes World Cup glory

Yamal, who recently celebrated his 19th birthday, has featured in all seven of Spain’s matches at the 2026 World Cup, scoring once and providing one assist during the tournament.

The young winger will now hope to crown his breakthrough World Cup campaign by helping Spain defeat Argentina in Sunday’s final at MetLife Stadium and secure the country’s second FIFA World Cup title.
