Wilfrid Kaptoum: Former Barcelona midfielder completes free transfer from Cacereno to Torremolinos

Wilfrid Kaptoum has completed a move from CP Cacereno to Juventud Torremolinos CF on a free transfer, joining the Primera Federacion Grupo II side after a deal was finalised on 2026-07-05. The Cameroon central midfielder arrives with a current estimated market value of 100k and continues his career in Spains third tier rather than returning to play in his home country.

The switch keeps Kaptoum in Spanish football but sees him cross from Primera Federacion Grupo I, where Cacereno compete, to Grupo II with Torremolinos. The deal was concluded without a transfer fee after his short spell at Cacereno, and he now moves into a division where he is set to compete against a different slate of regional rivals. Contract details have not been disclosed, but the agreement is registered to run until the end of his current deal, which is listed as expiring on 2026-07-05.

Kaptoum, born in Douala and holding Cameroonian nationality, is listed primarily as a central midfielder and is right-footed. Now 29, he joins Torremolinos with considerable experience across several leagues, including spells in Spains professional system, Major League Soccer in the United States, and the Cypriot top flight. His most recent market valuation shows a decline from 150k at Cacereno earlier in 2026 down to 100k shortly before the move, underlining how Torremolinos have picked up a player with a substantial pedigree at a relatively modest valuation.

Before signing for Cacereno in early 2026, Kaptoum was briefly without a club following his departure from Gimnastic de Tarragona, another Spanish side. That phase as a free agent underlines the volatility he has faced in recent seasons, alternating between contracts at established clubs and short gaps without a team. His move to Cacereno on 2026-02-04, and now the free transfer to Torremolinos, suggest his contractual status has been closely tied to short-term opportunities, with the possibility of entering the market as a free agent again when his current deal eventually expires.

Kaptoums career path features some of European footballs most recognisable names. He progressed through the Samuel Etoo Academy in Cameroon before joining FC Barcelonas youth system, advancing step by step from FC Barcelona Youth through the U16, U18 and U19 sides and eventually to Barcelona B (FC Barcelona Atletic). That upbringing embedded him in the possession-heavy, technically demanding style that often shapes central midfielders emerging from La Masia.

From Barcelona B he moved to Betis Deportivo Balompie and then into the Real Betis first-team structure, where his market value once peaked at 4 million euros in 2019. A loan to UD Almeria followed, before a series of moves that took him away from Spain and then back again. After leaving Betis as a free agent in 2020, he signed for New England Revolution in the United States at the start of 2021, playing in Major League Soccer and maintaining a valuation of around 1.5 million euros during that period.

His return to Spain came with UD Las Palmas in early 2023, followed by a transfer to AEK Larnaca in Cyprus later that year. From there, he joined Greek side Panserraikos in 2024, then again went through a short spell without a club in early 2025 before arriving at Gimnastic de Tarragona. That pattern of moves across Cyprus, Greece and Spain underlines how his career in recent years has been built predominantly abroad, far from Cameroon, and the latest move to Torremolinos keeps him in the Spanish system rather than bringing him back to a domestic Cameroonian league.

For Torremolinos, Kaptoum offers a profile shaped by years in technically oriented environments and exposure to different tactical cultures, from La Liga setups to MLS and Eastern Mediterranean competitions. For the player, remaining in Primera Federacion Grupo II provides continuity in Spanish football and a chance to stabilise his career after a run of short-term stays and free transfers. How he performs in this new setting, and how his market value responds, will help determine whether this period at Torremolinos becomes a launchpad for another step up the pyramid or a staging post before he re-enters the market as a free agent when his contract runs its course.
